Meet Your Emotions

Get to know what moves within you

Soul 101 understands emotions as E-motion; energy in motion: energy moving through your human experience, felt in your body and connected with the meaning life holds for you.

You may recognize its movement in the warmth of joy, the surge of anger, the flutter of anticipation, or the heaviness of sadness and getting acquainted with it is where we begin.

Emotional literacy is the practice of recognizing, naming, and understanding what you feel. It helps you explore what a feeling brings to your attention and choose how you want to respond.

You don’t have to make a feeling disappear before you can learn something from it.

Your Feelings and Your Beliefs Are Connected

The meaning you give an experience helps shape how you feel about it.

Imagine someone offers to help you.

If help means “Someone cares about me,” you might feel relieved or grateful.

If help means “They think I can’t manage,” you might feel embarrassed or defensive.

The offer may be the same. What you understand it to mean changes your experience. Within Soul 101, we explore emotions as a way to become aware of the definitions and beliefs we carry, especially those we have accepted so completely that we no longer notice them.

Our bodies, histories, and present circumstances belong in that exploration, too. We begin with curiosity:

“What am I feeling and what does this situation mean to me?”

A feeling gives us somewhere to look. Understanding it involves listening, asking questions, and leaving room to discover something new.

Let’s Meet an Emotion 🌊

It’s one thing to know your emotions have something to tell you. It’s another to know where to begin listening.

Let’s start with Joy, one of the many currents in our Emotion Ocean.

Below, you’ll find a simple introduction, an everyday example, and a small practice to help you notice what joy reveals about you.

This is a little taste of "Meet the Emotion Ocean", taking shape inside Mandy’s Treehouse. There, we’ll explore more feelings, the meanings and beliefs connected with them, and ways to respond with greater understanding.

It’s a place to return to as life brings different emotions to the surface.

For now, let’s get to know what lights you up.

Meet Joy ☀️

"There's Something Here I Enjoy"

Joy is the delight we feel in a moment of enjoyment, connection, or discovery. Sometimes it bubbles up as laughter and excitement. Sometimes it’s a quiet smile over your morning coffee.

What might it be showing you?

Joy can help you recognize what you appreciate and what feels meaningful to you: being understood, creating something, exploring, playing, or simply having room to be yourself.

Notice the meaning.

Laughing with someone you love might feel joyful because, in that moment, you feel connected and free to be yourself. The experience matters and so does what it means to you.

A little practice:

The next time you notice joy, pause and ask: “What am I enjoying about this and what does that tell me about myself?”

You don’t have to turn it into a purpose or a project. Sometimes getting to know yourself begins with noticing, “I like this.”
